Wow, I heard it!! Are you a Diana Ross fan? I think Michael must have been influenced by her since he even had a crush on her. Does she do that cry in other songs too? I also think Michael has a similar vibrato to Diana. Has he ever been quoted saying he's influenced by her? |

There's almost too many to list- he does it in sooo many songs. Keep the Faith is another.
I was thinking- I didn't mention this before- but I also thought that the hiccup could be like what rappers do when they go "uh uh ah uh uh" before singing a line- it's a form of vocal warm up within the song that adds character.

I absolutely love Mikes vocal hiccup which is used to give a certain emotion, according to wikepedia, and Mike 1st used this technique in the "Shake Your Body" song. Anyway, I was listening to "YANA" the other day and I'm sure you fans know the part where Mike does that long note for the bridge of the song. Then he starts doin his adlibs, but he makes his vocals sound like hes running out of breath from holding that very long note, was he just trying to make them sound more emotional? And I'm sure when artists are doing songs in the studio, they don't do the whole song in one take. I was just wondering if anybody knows the difference.
Another good example would be some of the fast songs he did on tour where hes dancing and singing at the same time, I'm sure he needed to catch his breath then. "WBSS" is a good example. I'm sure your not supposed to sing too much because you want to make sure you have enough energy to finish the song/tour. Thanks |

I love his Michael sounds - I took a 6 hour road trip with my cousin the other day and he was good sport and let me listen to MJ all the way and we were being silly singing along, and he commented on the beat boxing in the begining of Strangers in Moscow, and I told him about a video that I'd seen where he beat boxes (boxed, whatever you would say) and he thinks that is where is eee-hee, the hiccups and his other noises come from. I hadn't really thought of it that way, but if he beat boxes to get the song started, then it would make sense that he would keep some of the sounds in the songs... I just love his noises.... There are a few vids if you search Michael Jackson beatbox on youtube. I only made it through page 4 in this thread and I need to run to the store, but I wanted to reply before I forget what I wanted to say, so if this has already been mentioned, sorry lol
