I know you are disapointed that you cant see the show but this is an independant production by a Uk based company. It has nothing offically to do with Michael, and I dont think they have even thought about bringing the tour to America. Something like that would be huge, both finacially and publicity wise. Also as most of the cast are from the UK work permits and visa's would also be an issue.

hope this helps you understand that the USA are not being delibertly being left out of seeing this show

Review from last night from our very own City Of Culture.

THEATRE REVIEW: Thriller Live, Liverpool Empire Theatre
Apr 21 2008 by Peter Grant, Liverpool Daily Post

THIS spectacular touring show paid tribute to the creativity of the much- maligned megastar.

It was a celebration of Michael Jackson’s incredible back- catalogue, from the Jackson Five to the white- gloved solo artiste who created the biggest- selling album of all time, 25 years ago, Thriller.

This 2½-hour production was more than a tribute, with a narrator coming on and off introducing on-screen video flashbacks.

It all slickly gathered momentum for the second half, which was packed with non-stop song and dance sequences.

The show was not a re-playing of the whole of the Thriller album, but a stylised look back at MJ before things went horribly wrong in his private life.

Flying Music, who pre- sent the fab Solid Silver 60s packages with the likes of Gerry Marsden and the Rat Pack tours, teamed up with well- respected producer Adrian Grant. The result was a well-thought out, energetic showcase – a class act from start to jaw-dropping finish.

It featured 20 performers, many from the West End, including acrobatic dancers and a stunning live band, all illustrating that in the studio and on stage Jacko was (and is) a musical superman.

The choreography was faultless thanks to Lavelle Smith Jnr and the early Michael, played by Dominic Smith, a talent to look out for.

The hit songs were all here as different performers added extra texture to Jacko’s songs.

It was a veritable Jackson jukebox of a show, in which I Want You Back and I’ll Be There joined Man in the Mirror and the sing-alongs such as Rock With You and Blame It On the Boogie.

And what a finale with Billie Jean, Thriller – the title track – and the funky Black and White.

For Michael Jackson fans it really was a must-see theatrical thriller.

"Thriller – Live, a high-energy, all singing, all dancing tribute to the legendary singer Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5, is moonwalking into London from 2 January (press night 21 January) and the search is on to find a new West End star to play a vital role in the production.

The producers have announced a nationwide search to find a talented young boy to play the young Jackson. With auditions being held on Sunday 23 November at the Lyric theatre, if you are between 11-15 years old, black, African-American or dual heritage and have an undiscovered talent for singing, you could be in with a chance of starring in the new West End show. The producers are looking for someone with an unbroken pop/rock voice with a high range and confidence in abundance. People wishing to audition should register from 10:30 at the theatre with a passport-style photo and CV including any previous experience you have had performing, and be prepared to sing either Ben, I Want You Back or I’ll Be There as your audition piece.

The family entertainment show, which contains video footage and special effects, features many of Michael Jackson and The Jackson 5’s hits, including I Want You Back, I’ll Be There, Can You Feel It, Billie Jean and, of course, Thriller. With a live band and choreography from Gary Lloyd – who has worked with numerous pop stars including Leona Lewis, Girls Aloud and Robbie Williams – and five times MTV Award-winning LaVelle Smith Jnr, the show promises to do the king of pop justice.

Jackson, now 50 years old, began his professional career at the age of 11 alongside his siblings in the family’s band The Jackson 5. While still a member of the group, he launched a solo career that would go on to successfully span over 20 years. His albums Off The Wall (1979), Thriller (1982), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995), were all hits. In 2008, Thriller was re-released and reached number one in eight countries, proving Jackson’s music to be as popular and influential as ever.

Thriller – Live has previously toured the UK three times and played in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia. Producer Derek Nicol, from Flying Music, said “Thriller – Live is an uplifting, feel-good show with incredible choreography and sensational songs that everyone knows and loves – it’s just the sort of escapism entertainment people need to take their minds off how tough life is at the moment. Thriller – Live has high production values, a large company on stage and a live band – and it delivers high class entertainment that is suitable for everyone from eight to 80.”

Thriller – Live runs for a strictly limited season from 2 January until 12 April at the Lyric theatre."

Boy sought to play Michael Jackson

Producers have announced open auditions to find an unknown to play a young Michael Jackson on the West End stage.

The wannabe star, aged between 11 and 15, will be cast as the lead in the musical Thriller - Live when it opens in London in January.

The show, which has been seen in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia and travelled on three UK tours, is billed as a tribute to the hits and career of pop star Jackson and The Jackson 5.

Producers are looking for a "young black, African-American or dual heritage boy aged 11 to 15 with an excellent unbroken pop/rock voice with a high range, who is exciting, confident and energetic."

Open auditions take place on November 23 at the Lyric Theatre, where singers will be asked to sing either Ben, I Want You Back, or I'll Be There.

Pop legend Jackson is not involved in the musical, but Sony, which owns the back catalogue of his songs, is backing the show, a spokesman for the musical said.

There has been speculation that The Jackson 5, who last performed together in 2001, will be reuniting next year with the former King of Pop among them.

Jermaine Jackson recently said of the reunion: "This has been a long time coming for the Jackson family to get back together. It is going to be more like a family affair. Janet's going to open and, of course, the original Jackson 5..."

"We're in the studio and we're planning on being out there next year."

Thriller - Live opens on January 2 at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

As the King of Pop travels to London ahead of next week's court appearance, young Jacko wannabes across the country are practising their moves.

The lead role for West End show Thriller Live is up for grabs and the producers are holding open auditions.

Tony Rex, one of the show's producers, said they are hoping to find someone who can emulate Jackson in his early Motown days.

He said: "It's proving really popular - we've been getting loads of calls and emails from the young hopefuls.

"We're tyring to find someone that's got that star quality, the unique quality that Jackson had as a child.

"And we're casting the net far and wide - the audition is open to anyone.

"Our next star could be out playing with his friends and we'll try to find him."

The call sheet says the ideal candidate would be a "young, black, African-American or dual heritage boy aged 11 to 15 with an excellent unbroken pop/rock voice with a high range, who is exciting, confident and energetic."

Jacko hopefuls will be asked to sing either Ben, I Want You Back, or I'll Be There.

But Moonwalking is not on the list of requirements, as MJ only learned his funky dance skills as an adult.

Mr Rex added: "But if these kids can moonwalk that's a bonus - they may even end up rapping as well!

"Ultimately we're looking someone raw, fresh and exciting, who's not overtrained."

The show has been seen in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia and has travelled on three UK tours.

It charts the early life of Jacko, as the shining member of the Jackson Five.

:: The photocall for Jacko hopefuls is at 10.30am on Sunday November 23 at the Lyric Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue, London.

::Thriller - Live opens on January 2 at the Lyric Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue.

They'll be more from the auditions in a little bit so they say. What a coincidence MJ is in the country on the same day - wonder if he'll pop in haha.

ETA: Well they were inside the theatre at the auditions, they spoke to the boy who is/was currently playing MJ in the last Thriller tour. He said there were some really really good kids auditioning. He spoke highly of Michael and the reporter asked him if he had even met MJ, he said no, but his brother had haha. Then the reporter said that MJ was in London today and there could be a chance he could meet him - the boy said 'Hopefully!'

Outside the Lyric Theatre, in the heart of London's West End, a queue of boys forms orderly in the snow.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45233000/jpg/_45233855_jackokid203.jpg
They are there to prove that they have what it takes to be the next Michael Jackson. That means voice, moves and attitude.

13-year-old Daniel thinks he'll impress.

He said: "I've always been doing Michael Jackson since I was younger, so I thought it would be good to try and do it in the theatre."

So, once in and registered, the proper hard work begins.

In every space of the theatre - toilets, bars, stairwells - boys practised their song choices.

They were given three options to wow the judges; Ben, I'll be There and I Want You Back.

Now, imagine X Factor; the auditions and boot camp rolled into one, very long afternoon.

And, of course, there was no Simon, Louis, Cheryl or Dannii on hand to give feedback.

Instead there was Gary Lloyd, who's director, John Marr, the musical supervisor, producer Paul Walden and Adrian, who's the other producer as well as creator of the show.

Gary said they were hoping to spot someone who has a hint of stardom that they could develop.

"We're looking for that special something that Michael had when he was 12, you know, bursting onto the scene with his brothers. You knew he was the special one."

"We can hear, when they're singing one at a time, there are one or two voices and there are a couple of movers in there as well. It's looking very promising."
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45233000/jpg/_45233926_jacko_perform203.jpg
Nerves on stage

Stage one was singing one of the three chosen songs.

Then the boys were either told to hang around for part two or asked to find their parents because it was time to head home.

Things didn't go so well for 13-year-old Ronald.

It was his fourth time auditioning for the roll but he couldn't quite hit the notes the judges wanted to hear.

After his performance he burst into tears on stage and then went to gather his stuff.

He wasn't pleased when we asked him how his audition went.

"Terrible. It was rubbish. I was too nervous. There was nothing wrong with the key, I think my nerves got to me, they got to my voice," he said.

Thirteen-year-old Ashley was one who managed to get through to the second round despite a few hiccups and a bout of forgetfulness.

He said: "In my performance I kind of flopped it, because I forgot the words, I went blank.

"But then they gave me a chance and I sang The Girl is Mine which I knew the words to."

The second round was all about the moves.

Sadly for some, there was no moon-walking involved, but the 22 who got through had to learn some choreographed steps to I Want You Back.

They weren't easy but some managed to pull it off better than others.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/45233000/jpg/_45233868_jacko_stage203.jpg
Final choice

The judges then whittled them down to 12.

They went off to learn yet another Michael Jackson song that they sang as a group, before singing solo.

For 10-year-old MJ, it was his mum who was showing the nerves.

"I'm really excited, so we're hopeful. It's some really good experience for him," she said.

"His initials are MJ. He idolises Michael Jackson, so this part was made for him. And his agency keep ringing.

"He's only 10 and they're actually looking for 11 to 15-year-olds and he's been waiting for this part since he was eight."

Leyton's 14 and is starring in the stage production of Billy Elliot up the road in the West End.

He said: "I think it went really well, yeah. It was exciting. I'm full of a cold and I thought I'll just try my best and drink loads of water."

But who's going be the next MJ? Tony Rex, the show's manager, dropped the bombshell to all those waiting in the wings.

He said: "To be honest the standard has been amazing. We didn't know what to expect today and it's been incredibly difficult and we actually haven't made a decision yet.

"We need overnight to think about it. It's just so competitive."

The show opens in January.

Boys' joy at playing idol Jackson

Three teenagers who are to play Michael Jackson in the new West End show Thriller Live have spoken of their excitement at portraying their idol.

Layton Williams from Bury, Sterling Williams from London and Kieran Alleyne from Leicester - all aged 13 - will play the pop superstar in rotation.

They appeared at the Lyric Theatre dressed in 1970s clothes and performed Jackson 5 hit I Want You Back.

"It's quite scary that we have to be him as he was so amazing," said Layton.

'Overwhelmed'

Layton, the most experienced performer of the three, was the first black Billy Elliot.

"I'm just going to have to do my best," he added.

"I really like just getting on stage and, when I finish, for the audience to appreciate it and applaud you. It's a really good buzz.

I've always looked up to Michael Jackson. He has always been an idol to me
Thriller Live's Kieran Alleyne

"Working on stage is what I want to do for the rest of my life."

Sterling, who has played Simba in Lion King in the West End, said: "I love singing his [Jackson's] songs, so this is the perfect role for me."

The less-experienced Kieran beat 60 other hopefuls in open auditions to become one of the Michael Jacksons.

"I've always looked up to Michael Jackson. He has always been an idol to me and I've always been trying to follow in his footsteps and to get into a singing career.

"I'm really overwhelmed to be performing in a show which is a tribute to him," he said.

The opening performance of the show, which celebrates Jackson's career and features his hits, will take place on 2 January.

The singer is not involved in the production.

Trio's joy at landing Jackson roles

Press Assoc.

Three teenage boys have spoken of their joy at playing the role of their idol Michael Jackson in the West End performance of Thriller-Live.

Trio's joy at landing Jackson roles

The boys, all aged 13, will star in the production which celebrates the king of pop's life and features his greatest hits.

Layton Williams, from Wren Drive, Bury, Greater Manchester, Sterling Williams, from Dalton Avenue, Mitcham, south London and Kieran Alleyne, from Glenhills Boulevard, Leicester, rehearsed together at the Lyric Theatre after meeting for the first time on Wednesday.

The three boys, who will play the lead role in rotation, sported afro hairdos and 70s clothing, including large flares and woollen tank tops as they rehearsed the classic Jackson 5 hit I Want You Back.

Layton Williams, the most experienced of the three stars, was the first black Billy Elliot and the second longest-running star in the show's history. He finished working on Billy Elliot on November 30. Layton said that living up to the king of pop will be very challenging. "It's quite scary that we have to be him (Michael Jackson) because he was so amazing. I'm just going to have to do my best," he said.

Layton's early career contrasts that of Kieran Alleyne, a self-confessed "rookie" whose only stage experience was in a school tribute performance.

Kieran won the part after beating 60 other hopefuls at the open auditions. He said: "I've always looked up to Michael Jackson. He has always been an idol to me and I've always been trying to follow in his footsteps and to get into a singing career. I'm really overwhelmed to be performing in a show which is a tribute to him."

The last member of the trio, Sterling Williams, is again no stranger to stage performances, having played Simba in the West End performance of The Lion King.

Wearing a pair of multi-coloured striped flares, he said that after being a child model he decided acting was his destiny. He said: "When I found out I had got this part I was jumping around and hugging my mum. I was so excited and happy. I love singing his (Jackson's) songs, so this is the perfect role for me."

The boys will be directed by award winning choreographer Gary Lloyd, who has worked with a number of stars including Robbie Williams, Tom Jones and Cliff Richard. The opening performance for Thriller-Live is on January 2.

Thriller—Live Casts Three 13-Year-Olds to Share Role of Young Michael Jackson

By Mark Shenton
04 Dec 2008

Following a nationwide search and open-call auditions that were held in the West End on Nov. 23, the producers of Thriller—Live have announced the three 13-year-old boys who have won the role of the young Michael Jackson in the show.

As previously announced, the production will begin performances at the Lyric Theatre Jan. 2, 2009, prior to an official opening Jan. 21. The limited run will play through April 12.

The three boys who will share the role are Layton Williams and Sterling Williams, who have both previously appeared in West End musicals, and Kieran Alleyne, who is making his professional stage debut.

Layton Williams was the first black Billy Elliot and the second longest-running star in the show's history; he just ended his run in the show Nov. 30. He also starred in the recent BBC2 comedy "Beautiful People" by Jonathan Harvey. He lives in Bury, Lancashire.

Sterling Williams has previously played young Simba in The Lion King in the West End but has been in full time education for the past year. He lives in Mitcham in Surrey and attends school in Kingston.

Kieran Alleyne is a newcomer from Leicester, and his only prior stage experience was playing Michael Jackson in a school tribute production, called Thriller. He was discovered through the open audition for Thriller—Live.

The show, which pays tribute to the musical hits and career of Michael Jackson and the Jackson 5, has previously enjoyed three U.K. tours as well as engagements in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia.

Billed as a spectacular, high-octane show specially created to celebrate the career of the "world's greatest entertainer and undisputed King of Pop," the show's performance schedule will include two Sunday showings every week at 3 and 7 PM, as well as Tuesday-Saturday evening performances at 8 PM and an additional Saturday matinee at 4 PM.

The West End season is being produced by Paul Walden and Derek Nicol for Flying Music, and Sony BMG Music Entertainment UK in association with Adrian Grant for Key Concerts.

In a press statement, producer Nicol of Flying Music said, "Thriller – Live is an uplifting, feel-good show with incredible choreography and sensational songs that everyone knows and loves — it's just the sort of escapist entertainment people need to take their minds off how tough life is at the moment. Thriller – Live has high production values, a large company on stage and a live band — and it delivers high class entertainment that is suitable for everyone from 8 to 80. It's obvious to us from the recent early closing of West End musicals, cancellation of several planned UK tours, and the number of ticket discounts and promotions, that money is extremely tight and a lot of the current shows are struggling to fill their theatres. We want to make sure that Thriller – Live is in the price bracket of as many people as possible."

Paul Curran of Sony BMG Music Entertainment UK, added, "The show is a celebration of one of the greatest music catalogues in history. We are thrilled to be involved and there are obviously many promotional and marketing opportunities between the show and our catalogue."

Songs that will be heard in the show include "I Want You Back," "I'll Be There," "Show You The Way To Go," "Can You Feel It," "Rock With You," "She's Out Of My Life," "Thriller," "Beat It," "Ben," "ABC," "Man in the Mirror," "Dirty Diana," "Billie Jean" and "Earth Song."

The production was originally conceived and created by executive director Adrian Grant, a long-time associate of Jackson's and author of "Michael Jackson – The Visual Documentary." It is directed and choreographed by Gary Lloyd (who has previously worked with Leona Lewis, Will Young, Gareth Gates, Emma Bunton, Robbie Williams, Pink, Anastacia, Lemar, Rachel Stevens, Kelly Clarkson and Girls Aloud) and features additional choreography by five-time MTV Award-winning LaVelle Smith Jnr. and Kerys Nathan.

Mamma Mia? No. Thank you.

No 00's stuff at all I noticed.. I was half expecting a cheeky little "You Rock My World" but there was none!
I'm not complaining though to be honest.

I would have loved for them to have done Jam, Who Is It, Give In To Me, Workin' Day And Night, and They Don't Care About Us.

I just found this on yahoo, it is not the first time claiming

Ricko Baird, who co-choreographed Michael Jackson's Number 1 hit "You Rock My World" and doubled for him in the video, dances on stage to "Smooth Criminal" at the press preview for the musical "Thriller Live" at the Lyric Theatre in London January 8, 2009. I have written to the staff of Thriller live, they should clear up that, but never got an answer. Next time, if they ever will come again to Germany I wouldn't go or I go an will boo at the theatre. I am so mad about this claim.

Very nice, good food for the tabloids.

Look at this man, never he can give the impersonator of Michael, it is not his shape, never. He is too thick!

"The full cast has been confirmed for Thriller Live, featuring the songs of Michael Jackson & The Jackson 5, which opens at the Lyric Theatre Shaftesbury Ave, on 21 Jan 2009, following previews from 2 Jan 2009 - booking to 12 April 2009.

As previouly mentioned, three 13-year-old boys Layton Williams, Sterling Williams & Kieron Alleyne share the role of young Michael Jackson.

Nice article here from the Northern Echo from Adrian Grant

"He’s not so Bad

10:18am Saturday 17th January 2009

Michael Jackson’s huge UK fanbase helped Adrian Grant to launch a hit tribute show.

LIFE has been a thriller for theatre producer Adrian Grant since 1988 when he became a Michael Jackson fan and has ended up running shows personally endorsed by the mega-star.

Grant opens Thriller Live in the West End on Wednesday and brings the touring version to Newcastle and York in the next two months.

So what was it like when he met the controversial superstar back in 1990? “When I first went over to Michael Jackson’s Neverland ranch and there was monkeys running around inside and a tiger, a giraffe, llamas and everything, I was thinking ‘this isn’t real’. His security guard told me ‘it is real for Michael Jackson, he’s grown up with that, that’s his reality’.

“When you do spend time with him you realise he’s as very down to earth as much as I’m talking to you now. He’ll joke around and he’s very knowledgeable about his music and his craft, but away from all that he’s just a normal guy who has had massive success. His life has been lived under a microscope unfortunately and he’s been naive and been let down by people and made mistakes which he’d hold his hand up to,” says Grant.

In the Eighties, he launched the Off The Wall fan magazine selling 200 copies. Subscriptions grew to 25,000 and led to an annual Michael Jackson tribute show from 1991 with the tenth anniversary event attended by Jackson.

“We had over 3,000 people there and it came into my mind that it would make a stage show in its own right. At that time a one-off event cost us about £30,000 up to £100,000,”

says Grant who gained the investment of the Flying Music production company in 2006 to develop the show, but admits it was hard handing over “his baby” to the commercial experts. “On the creative side I work hand in hand with the director (Gary Lloyd) but he provides the choreography and staging,” he says.

The only down side of linking your burgeoning stage production career so closely to Jackson is that Reading-based Grant finds himself having to defend the 50-year-old singer’s reputation even though his show never touches on the “wacko”

side of the artist.

“The funny thing is that when one of his records, like Billy Jean, plays people aren’t talking about the allegations against him. We don’t touch on any of the controversy.

People are just dancing and having a good time. We’ve had people as young as five and as old as 70 dancing in the aisles,” says Grant, who developed Thriller Live from two years of UK and European touring. This year it will move on from Newcastle and York to Czechoslovakia and Poland.

Jackson hasn’t seen this latest version of the show but brother Tito did pop along to the Lyric Theatre last week “and was complimentary”
while a taped version will be sent to the singer who is currently recording in Los Angeles and promising new releases, TV appearances and tours in the near future. “He’s going to come back bigger and better than ever. I’m looking forward to hearing his new material. He’s looking forward to putting this negative period behind him. In my case, it’s hard to go wrong with Michael Jackson’s music.

“When we first started touring he gave me a message of congratulations. Otherwise, there is no direct deal with Michael Jackson.

It’s a concept presentation of his music, not a book musical where you’d need planned rights. With tribute shows you’re free to put on a presentation.”

Grant says that his many meetings with Jackson shows that the “reclusive” side of the singer is more of a media myth. “At the end of the day he’s one of the most open pop stars I’ve met. Prince is reclusive, but Michael will open his doors to the public and fans. I once offered him a few dance moves which he laughed at. His advice to me was that you need rhinoceros skin to be in this industry,” he says.

THE West End version boasts Sunderland’s Ben Foster as the voice of Michael Jackson during his rock music period and he sings songs like Beat It and Dirty Diana playing the US performer’s alter ego.

“We could never emulate Michael Jackson as one person because of the expansive career he’s had which has lasted 40 years so we’re going from having a young Michael Jackson and split his material across five lead singers including a female version (originally Darlington’s Zoe Birkett followed by Denise Pearson of Five Star for the West End run),” says Grant.

"Kieran Allenye steps on stage tonight dressed as his idol Michael Jackson in the West End production of Thriller Live.

Less than two months ago, the 13-year-old, from Eyres Monsell, Leicester, was another schoolboy with hopes of breaking into acting.

He will be playing Jacko in his formative years, as the lead singer of the Jackson Five, before an audience of critics and celebrities for the press night at the Lyric Theatre, in Shaftesbury Avenue, London.

Stars including Lulu, Girls Aloud and Britain's Got Talent winner George Sampson will be among the crowd – but the guest Kieran will be looking to impress the most is Michael's brother and Jackson Five guitarist, Tito Jackson.

Kieran, of Abington High School, said: "I never thought I would get the chance to meet one of the Jackson Five, but now Tito is coming to watch me – it is unreal!

"I'm excited to see everybody you see on TV, but to know they are watching me will be an amazing experience."

During the show, Kieran performs a range of Jackson Five songs, including I Want You Back and ABC. He also sings on Jacko's later solo material, including Bad and Black or White.

Proud mum, Susan, said that she was in floods of tears the first time she went to see her son perform. She said: "I was just so proud of him.""

Jackson brother at show premiere

Michael Jackson's brother Tito has attended the opening night of a West End show about his family.

Thriller - Live has been billed as a tribute to the hits and career of pop star Jackson and The Jackson 5.

Last year producers held open auditions to find a young actor to play the musical legend on stage.

Tito, who said he was "very excited" about seeing the show, signed autographs outside the Lyric Theatre in Shaftesbury Avenue.

Speculation

During the audition process, producers said they wanted a boy aged between 11 and 15.

He had to be black or mixed race boy with "an excellent unbroken pop/rock voice with a high range".

Singers were required to perform Ben, I Want You Back, or I'll Be There.

The show has already been seen in Germany, Holland and Scandinavia and travelled on three UK tours.

The Jackson 5 had hits with Ben and I Want You Back

Michael Jackson himself is not involved in the musical, but Sony, which owns his back catalogue, is supporting the show.

There has been speculation that The Jackson 5, who last performed together in 2001, will be reuniting next year with the former King of Pop among them.

However, the 50-year-old star, best known for hits such as Bad and Smooth Criminal, has denied the rumours.

Last month he issued a statement, that said he "no plans to record or tour" with his siblings.

Cool! It was capacity crowd when I went, but that was the opening night on 2nd January.

I'm confused at how they're saying that Tito went to see it on the opening night, when in actual fact it was a couple of weeks after I went..

all west end shows have about 2 to 3 weeks of previews before the official opening night. This gives the cast and crew a chance to get used to performing the show infront of an audience in the theatre and to see if any changes are necessary. The night you went to see the show , jan 2 was the first night of the previews, the first time the cast and crew peformed the show in front of a paying audience in the theatre. The night Tito went was the official opening night

Extra Thriller

Adrian Grant talks to Viv Hardwick about the meeting with Michael Jackson that inspired his show Thriller Live. The touring version of the West End hit reaches Darlington next week.

TOTAL disbelief was the reaction of long-time Michael Jackson fan Adrian Grant when he got to meet the controversial superstar on his Neverland ranch back in 1990.

“When I first went over to Michael Jackson’s Neverland ranch and there weres monkeys running around inside and a tiger, a giraffe, llamas and everything, I was thinking ‘this isn’t real’.

His life has been lived under a microscope unfortunately and he’s been naive and been let down by people and made mistakes which he’d hold his hand up to, “ says Grant, who opened Thriller Live in the West End in January after finding success with a touring version which reaches Darlington Civic Theatre next week.

At that time a one-off event cost us about £30,000 up to £100,000, “ says Grant, who gained the investment of the Flying Music production company in 2006 to develop the show, but admits it was hard handing over “his baby” to the commercial experts. “On the creative side I work hand-in-hand with the director (Gary Lloyd) but he provides the choreography and staging, “ he says.

The only downside of linking your burgeoning stage production career so closely to Jackson is that Reading-based Grant finds himself having to defend the 50-year-old singer’s reputation even though his show never touches on the “wacko”

side of the artist.

“The funny thing is that when one of his records, like Billy Jean, plays people aren’t talking about the allegations against him. We don’t touch on any of the controversy.

People are just dancing and having a good time. We’ve had people as young as five and as old as 70 dancing in the aisles, “ says Grant, who developed Thriller Live from two years of UK and European touring. This year it will move on from Newcastle and York to Czechoslovakia and Poland.

Jackson hasn’t seen this latest version of the show but brother Tito did pop along to the Lyric Theatre recently “and was complimentary” while a taped version was sent to the singer who, until suffering skin cancer problems, was promising new releases, TV appearances and a tour to London’s O2 arena.

Grant says: “He’s going to come back bigger and better than ever.

With tribute shows, you’re free to put on a presentation.”

His advice to me was that you need rhinoceros skin to be in this industry, “ he says.

Sunderland’s Ben Forster as the voice of Michael Jackson during his rock music period, with the material shared by five lead singers including a female version (originally Darlington’s Zoe Birkett followed by fellow ex-Pop Idol contestant Hayley Evetts).
