Thriller goes number 2 in Aussie charts
Pop legend Michael Jackson has made a sensational comeback, with his album Thriller leaping from 44 to two in the Australian charts this week.
Jackson re-released his classic album earlier this month to celebrate 25 years since it first hit the charts.
The anniversary edition includes remixes by Fergie, Akon and Kanye West.
Jackson couldn't quite knock out singer-songwriter Jack Johnson, whose new album Sleep Through The Static remains in the top spot.
On the singles chart, pop princess Rihanna continues to reign with Don't Stop The Music at number one.

Tony R 19th February 2008, 10:40 AM I've researched this and I'm pretty sure this is factual:
Thriller - Biggest Selling album ever
HIStory - 2nd Biggest selling double album ever
Blood On The Dancefloor - Biggest selling remix album ever
Thriller 25 - I'm sure on course to be biggest selling re-issue ever. I can't find any offical stats for re-issues but I've never seen a Top 5 reissue before.

I thought it was the biggest.
Has something overtaken it?
=EDIT=
Ah...forgot about "The Wall".
Although, according to this it's joint-second with the White Album.
Actually, I question if those albums would be that high had they not both been through the vinyl-CD transfer...HIStory hasn't been through that, so it hasn't been bought at least twice by most people.

I thought so too but it seems Pink Floyds The Wall is bigger (God knows why). 30 million to HIStory's 18m.

Hey...Pink Floyd have sold more albums/concert tickets than any other British band...so ssshhhhhhh
But, anyways, as I say...most people who bought The Wall bought it twice because of the whole CD issue...HIStory hasn't gone through that...so who knows...if it was a different time...
Pompous Git 20th February 2008, 12:40 AM HIStory - 2nd Biggest selling double album ever
That was ONLY for the United States of America. It's the biggest selling double album there as reported by MTV America in March 1996. It seems fans took that the wrong way and made it into a global sales figure thing. Even KING! mag says it for the USA.
The Wall isn't a double album set, especially if we go by official running time to qualify for that. God knows why some people go on about that. Total running time for The Wall is a measly 81:27. Dangerous is 77mins and a bit long, 1 CD set and double LP set. HIStory's total running time is well past 130mins of music and is also a triple LP set unlike The Wall.
Running time lengths for double albums seems to be kinda up in the air, but generally accepted that over 100mins is a double album. Record labels are still free to package the record as a double album though even if running time is less than 100mins.

It's difficult...because it WAS a proper double album when it was released (on vinyl), in terms running length...
Is it not a proper double album because it was released at the wrong point in time? Well...that seems a bit unfair.
As far as I'm concerned, if it's 2 discs, it's a double album.
On a side salad...or rather the main meal, this is the side salad...nu,mber 1 on the HMV online chart.

#1 Thriller
Little Steven 20th February 2008, 12:25 PM Yaaaaaaaaaaay!
Little Steven 20th February 2008, 01:22 PM Accoridng to Hits Daily Double, Michael Jackson and this year`s Grammy winner Amy Winehouse are in a battle for the #2 spot on the US Album Chart:
"Unless something totally unforeseen happens, Jack Johnson will stay on top of the album chart for the second week with a projected 140-150k on his Brushfire/Universal Republic release. The battle appears to be for #2, with both the debuting deluxe reissue of Michael Jackson’s Thriller (Sony Legacy) and the resurging Amy Winehouse (Universal Republic) heading toward 110-120k—meaning Monte Lipman and company will at worst have two of this week’s top three sellers. Here’s how the rest of the Top 10 is shaping up: #4, Alicia Keys (J Records), 100-105k; #5, 2008 Grammy Nominees (Hip-O/Universal), 70-75k; and #6, Taylor Swift (Big Machine), 50-55k; with Hannah Montana 2 (Disney), Herbie Hancock’s Album of the Year winner (Verve), Juno (Rhino) Mary J. Blige (Geffen) and John Legend jockeying for the last four slots, with 40-45k apiece."
Marni 21st February 2008, 01:02 AM Michael hit number 1 on the US catalog albums chart. He was not eligible for the hot 200.
Thanks to TSCM / MJJR.net (http://www.maximum-jackson.com/discussion/www.mjjr.net) for this:
With sales that surprised both Sony BMG and the music industry as a whole, Michael Jackson's Thriller 25th Anniversary Edition sold a reported 166,000 copies its first week within the United States alone, and easily made its formal début at #1 on Billboard's Top Pop Catalog Albums, pushing "Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers: Greatest Hits" back down to #2 after one week at the top.
Since Thriller 25 is a back catalog reissue and not a new studio album, it is not eligible for placement on any other official Billboard charts within the United States. Were it permissible on the Billboard 200, Thriller 25 would have made its entrance at #2, ahead of Amy Winehouse and behind Jack Johnson. U.S. sales predictions for Thriller 25 ranged from 90,000 to 120,000, but the final tally from Soundscan of 166,000 copies sold toppled any and all prior predictions. In fact, by the middle of last week, Thriller 25 was sold out at many retail stores across the United States and elsewhere, while other stores hadn't even gotten their shipment in before the end of the week; which undoubtedly affected sales to a degree.
Thriller 25 debuted in the Top 3 throughout many countries around the world, and even went gold in Poland on its very first day. Not bad! Also, according to Billboard.biz, the last time that a catalog title sold as many copies as Thriller 25 was more than 11 years ago. Billboard.com writes:
http://www.billboard.biz/bbbiz/search/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1003712566
More on the Grammys in a moment, but first, we switch our attention to the Top Pop Catalog Albums chart. Any title that is 18 months or older, including reissues of older albums, finds a home on this 50 position chart. That includes the 25th anniversary reissue of Michael Jackson's landmark 1982 album "Thriller." The set, expanded to include reworkings of some of the original album's songs by Akon, Kanye West, Fergie and will.i.am storms the chart at No. 1, selling 166,000. That's not only the best sales week for Jackson since 2001, but also the biggest number any catalog title has seen since Christmas week of 1996, when Kenny G's "Miracles - The Holiday Album," powered through 192,000.From michaeljackson.com

ennazus 21st February 2008, 03:50 AM Imagine when most stores got their shipments!
Man.. The sales will be booming! I wonder how is it doing on the Oricon chart (Japan), although I'm not sure if it is eligible.
Marni 21st February 2008, 04:06 AM This really is incredible for a re-release. In its first week, Thriller 25 appears to have sold over half a million worldwide. Incredible!!
ennazus 21st February 2008, 04:10 AM Okay, I got the results from Oricon Chart. I'm pretty confused now, because Thriller 25 is officially released yesterday - 20th Feb, but on the chart, apparently it is released on 5th Feb. Unlike most albums that are listed there, many have a link, and for Thriller 25 there isn't a link. So I assume it is a pre-order thing.
Anyway, foreign music charted in Japan, is a weekly thing, so for this week, Thriller 25 is #11. So competing not only with Western artistes, the album is competing with Asian artistes (that are not from Japan).

mikeheartstrong 21st February 2008, 05:37 AM Hurray, however, Marni, there was a little typographical error in your catalogue statement, It's no 1 and not 2.

And thanks for posting Suz!
New article about why Thriller failed to qualify for the charts:
Thriller Fails To Qualify For Billboard Chart
http://www.undercover.com.au/News-Story.aspx?id=4167
by Paul Cashmere - February 21 2008
Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' album will be absent from Billboard's Album Chart tomorrow because it is considered a "catalogue' album.
The 25th anniversary edition of 'Thriller' sold 166,000 units this week, according to Nielsen SoundScan, which would have placed it at number two behind Jack Johnson.
However, 'Thriller' has been designated to the Top Pop Catalog chart instead of the Billboard 200 because it is not considered a new release.
Geoff Mayfield, Billboard's Sr. Director of Charts, says there was much debate between Sony-BMG and Billboard over the listing but in the end Billboard would not change its policy for 'Thriller'.
"Sony-BMG stated a strong case and we did consider it," Geoff tells Undercover News. "I took to heart their comments and then I took it to retail. The response I got overwhelmingly is that it is a catalogue album and belongs on the catalogue chart".
"It is being worked in Sony through Legacy which is their catalogue division', he said. "The core of the album is a 25 year old recording. The addition of new material doesn't make it different".
Over the years, hundreds, if not thousands of albums have been reissued with additional material just like 'Thriller'. "U2's recent 'The Joshua Tree' reissue and Beck's 'Odelay' fall into the same category," he states. "In fact, Beck's album has new tracks just like 'Thriller' and it did not qualify."
Other albums such as The Who's 'Live At Leeds' and Wings 'Band On The Run' were reissued like 'Thriller' with extra tracks.
"I wasn't interested in what Sony-BMG thought," Geoff said. "We always rethink our rules. We did so in November. Sometimes there is a change, sometimes there is not. To change the rules for 'Thriller' would have signalled a change for all other albums moving forward."
So why is the reissue of 'Thriller' different to the reissue of 'Traveling Wilburys' which did qualify for the chart? "Wilburys was the entire Wilburys output in one package," he says. It was never done before. If 'Thriller' and 'Off The Wall' were combined into one package then that would qualify and would have been charted".
'Thriller' is the second biggest album of all-time in the United States. Jackson needs to sell another 3 million copies to beat the current title holder Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits'.
Beret Hips 21st February 2008, 01:16 PM I am seriously so proud to be a fan right now. Omg I LOVE Michael so much
Anyway. This is BS.
"Wilburys was the entire Wilburys output in one package," he says. It was never done before. If 'Thriller' and 'Off The Wall' were combined into one package then that would qualify and would have been charted".
He ^ is talking out of his ass. What a stupid rule. 'It was never done before'. Well adding new tracks to Thriller had also never been done before! I think that putting Off The Wall and Thriller together should qualify for the album charts LESS than Thriller 25. Thriller 25 should qualify. That's just a stupid rule that isn't seen anywhere else in the world. Just the US  An album is an album, and it just so happens to be the second best selling album this week. I just think it's so unfair.
'Thriller' is the second biggest album of all-time in the United States. Jackson needs to sell another 3 million copies to beat the current title holder Eagles 'Their Greatest Hits'.
I really think he will do it with Thriller 25. Come on US fans! Just 3 million to go :D
mikeheartstrong 21st February 2008, 07:53 PM Com'on, let's not take it so serious. Rules are rules and MJ can never be a reason for changes unlesss..... Besides, the fact thatb the world now knows how well he's selling with a cataloguie album is a foreshadowing of more sales (probably beating Billboard's no.1) and better promotions to come. Keep the MJ feel alive people.

THRILLER 25 SELLS 400,000 COPIES WORLDWIDE IN DEBUT WEEK
Thriller 25 has sold more copies this week across the globe than any other album, with sales pushing 400,000 copies!

Another great Fox Business article:
http://www.foxbusiness.com/article/michael-jacksons-thriller-25-25th-anniversary-edition-worlds-topselling-album_488181_1.html
Thriller 25 -- the newly-expanded deluxe 25th anniversary edition of Michael Jackson's Thriller, the world's best-selling album of all-time -- is America's #2 Top-Selling Album this week, more than a quarter century after the album's original release. Already shaping up as one of the hottest albums of 2008, Thriller 25 has rocketed into the Top 5 (or better) in a variety of territories across the planet following its worldwide release the week of February 11.
With first week's sales in the United States totaling 165,805 units, Thriller 25 enters the Billboard Top Pop Catalog chart at #1. (During the past 52 week period, the average first week's sales for an album hitting #1 on the Top Pop Catalog chart has been 16.6 thousand pieces; Thriller 25 entered the chart with 10x that number. Because of a technicality in the rules of Billboard charting, Thriller 25 is ineligible to chart on the Top 200. Based on first week's sales, Thriller 25, if eligible, would have entered the Top 200 at #2, nestled between Jack Johnson at #1 and Amy Winehouse at #3.)
Michael Jackson's iconic music film for "Thriller" is currently the #1 music video download on iTunes.
Read more at the site.
ennazus 22nd February 2008, 05:50 AM ^ and the other half of the world haven't got the album yet! Man, I know I'm being whiny cos I still haven't got mine yet, cos it isn't here in Singapore yet. But imagine the sales number if it is released worldwide on the same day!

Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ turns silver
By Perry Gil S. Mallari
At least in the Philippines, there seems to be a resurgence of interest in Michael Jackson. For one, dancer Jojo Alejar, famous in the 80s for perfectly emulating Jackson’s “moonwalk” dance moves, is back in the limelight with his popular late-night program Sobrang Good Nite Show with Jojo A. In January, Cebu’s dancing inmates who had become an overnight YouTube sensation with their synchronized performance of Jackson’s “Thriller,” caught the attention of the national media when they almost made it to the city’s annual Sinulog Festival. Call it coincidence, but the timing was perfect because the year 2008 marks the 25th anniversary of Jackson’s Thriller, still considered the world’s biggest-selling album of all time.
Thriller was Jackson’s sixth solo album and his second with mega-producer Quincy Jones. Almost overnight, the album catapulted the former boy soprano of Jackson 5 to international superstardom. Fans of Jackson would definitely look back to this period as the golden phase of his career and the time when he was still recognizably and handsomely “black.” Thriller, shortly after its release, had etched an indelible mark in popular culture embraced by the music, dance and fashion frontiers.
Sans the controversies attached to his persona during recent years, Jackson remains among the most highly acclaimed and influential icon of pop culture to this day. He has under his belt the following recognitions: “Most Successful Entertainer of All Time” bestowed by the Guinness Book of World Records; “Best Selling Pop Male Artist of the Millennium” by the World Music Awards; and “Artist of the Century Award” by the American Music Awards. He was also twice inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame— the first was in 1997 as a member of the Jackson 5 and as a solo artist in 2001.
In celebration of the album’s 25th anniversary, Sony BMG is releasing a special collector’s edition package dubbed as Thriller 25. The edition will include the entire original album plus seven bonus tracks featuring today’s hottest performers who are all paying homage to Jackson’s magnum opus. Take these names: Fergie with a seductive rendition of “Beat It 2008”; Kanye West with new remix of “Billie Jean”; Akon with a 2008 version of “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin”; and Will.I.Am’s creative remixes of the “The Girl is Mine” and “P.Y.T.”
Thriller 25 will prove to be one nostalgic blast to old Jackson diehards as it includes a DVD featuring the artist’s groundbreaking short films “Thriller,” “Beat It,” and “Billie Jean.” Two more gems included in the package are a film clip of Jackson’s Emmy-nominated performance of “Billie Jean” from the legendary Motown 25: Yesterday, Today and Forever television special, which posted sky-high ratings when it was aired on NBC on May 16, 1983 and “For All Time,” a rare unreleased cut from the original “Thriller” recording sessions.

damien 10th March 2008, 03:27 PM I say the same! One massive documentary to end the campaign - then start the new stuff.
i dont agree there. I reckon the doco to celebrate the making and all the interviews. Blow smoke up the albums ass and boost the sales again. But i still think there is life in the T25 campaign yet. Beat It to me (although not my personal fave) is the power single of the lot, and I dont think they will end the campaign till that, and probably For All Time (to end campaign) have been released to maximize sales and Michael's radioplay exposure before NEW album...
Tony R 10th March 2008, 04:45 PM ^ I don't know, you can't milk it too much. I reckon For All Time would get slaughtered criticallyand fail commercially. That's not just my opinion, every review I've read of T25 calls in a mediocre or third rate ballad. I know a lot of fans love it, but this is to get non fans to buy T25.
mikeheartstrong 10th March 2008, 05:27 PM For all Time is good and critically, it can be appreciated. I agree with the docu idea.

Tony R 24th March 2008, 09:14 AM Down to 14 on UK album chart. Still amazing. There were 5 new Top 10 entries so many albums fell down.
T25 spent 4 weeks in the Top 10. To put that into perspective. The Feeling had a new album out the same week of release as T25 (The Feeling are a new-ish British group with big things expected for their second album), that spent one week in Top 10 and is now at 37. Plus as said before Janet didn't make the Top 50.
I pray, Sony/Mike don't let the momentum get away on this one and follow it up with new stuff soon. The music business moves so fast, it won't be long before T25 is forgotton.
Marni 24th March 2008, 09:28 AM It's amazing how this is going in different countries- Thriller is up again on the Aussie charts, the same on the US chart, but dropping on the UK chart...
Tony R 24th March 2008, 09:35 AM I suppose it depends on promotion and how albums usually fare on charts. I the UK it's only current albums that hang around in the Top 10 for ages as new singles get released. Compilations usually last one or two weeks as the fans buy it straight away.
Promo-wise in the UK we've had nothing since TGIM single which fared badly with no promotion. We've had TV ads for T25 but thats about it.
