Wyclef Jean has claimed that Michael Jackson owes him money for production duties he performed during recording sessions, according to The Sun.

According to the newspaper, Jean claimed that he collaborated with Jackson ten years ago, but is yet to be paid for his services.

He is quoted as saying: “After Mike did [1997 album] ‘Blood On The Dancefloor’ I went into the studio with him.

“We did a couple of sessions. When I’m in the studio I'm very specific. I'm very tough in the studio.

“It was a long time ago now, but I still haven't been paid. Mike knows the money he owes me. I just wish he'd get in touch.”

And he waits 10 years?? Jeezo, if someone owed me lots of money for something, I wouldn't wait 10 years to get round to moaning about it. I'd be asking the person about it well before then. So...hmmm.... :ninja:

10 years?? Pfffttttt! Wyclef should've sorted this out a long time ago - I know he did some stuff in the studio with MJ during Invincible sessions, so he is probably talking about that time.

MJ most likely doesn't remember and Sony paid for all collaborators, musicians, studio time, etc, so it's not MJ he should be after, but Sony. Labels handle this stuff so their artists can just work on music.

Man, John Landis did the same thing - 25 years later, saying that MJ owed him money for Thriller, yet they still worked together on Black or White. It sucks.

Ah, but Landis said outright that it was SONY who owed him the money. He just believes the MJ/Sony was a factor in him not getting the royalties due to him from Sony. After all, Sony collect and administer the royalties for the Sony products which feature the Thriller video.

Fans just sorta misread what he was really saying.

This is the direct quote, Gary. I thought I misread too, but nope...

"Listen," he says smiling, "Michael probably owes me $10 million because he's in hock to Sony so deeply. All the monies from the Thriller video, which I own 50 per cent, are collected by Sony. My deal is with Michael's company, and he owes Sony so much that they keep the money. So I will never get the money, and if I want to sue Michael, it's like, 'Get in line.' "

It's kinda like... which is it? Sony or Michael?

John is actually talking about Sony when he said "Michael's company". John states "All the monies from the Thriller video, which I own 50 per cent, are collected by Sony". Not MJ or any MJ company. Legally, whoever collects the monies is responsible for distributing it.

It does look like JOhn twisted it right round in the very last sentence. Begs the question really - "Oi, John! Did you get your money for BoW?!?!"

The quote was iffy from the off.

i don't understand why these people come into mike's life years later, either suing or demanding ka-ching, and yet all this wasted went by and they did nothing about it. :no2: you snooze, you lose, in my opinion. i have absolutely no respect for idiot whiners that wait years later to get their money...not only that, but he worked with mike on the new thriller album. why didn't he say anything to mike upfront then? this story better be false, cuz i'm sick of people like that

I know you can defend Michael to the death but if owed Wyclef or whoever money, he should pay. It's the way of the world. Although wotking with Mike is a priviledge it will have cost Wyclef a fortune in production & studio time & he should get paid.

Maybe he left it so long to give Mike time after all the troubles.

I don't see why he had to make this public though. Should of just kept it between him and MJ.

When John Landis said MJ's company owes him money, could he have meant Sony Publishing? He stated Sony collects the royalites for Thriller, but whoever collects the money also distributes the royalites. No way around that.

John would be mistaken for thinking SMP is Michael's company and that MJ is therefore at fault. MJ is a major shareholder and SMP employs people who deal with royalties etc. Incidentally, Sony has been sued more than any other company over unpaid royalties. Bruce Swedien could've meant the same thing too and perhaps Wyclef Jean does as well.

However, it is wrong for these guys to single MJ out because as far as the law stands it is SMP/Sony Music Corp. who owe the money if their claims are correct. Not Michael Jackson, so these guys single MJ out cos it makes headline news. They probably hope that if it's headline news seemingly against MJ then he'll be angry enough to deal with SMP/Sony. They always knew that would be a long shot and they KNOW MJ isn't at fault there.

Still, funny how Rodney Jerkins got his royalties directly from SMP for work on Invincible as did the other personnel. Not from MJ cos that's what the publishing side is for and the label pays for studio time & costs of hiring musicians, etc.

BTW, Wyclef is NOT asking for unpaid royalties from 10 years ago - he's on about the Invincible sessions from 2000.

:toofunny: As if someone would wait 10 years to ask for the money back. And I don't see why he is moaning about the money it's not as if Michael doesn't have the money to pay him. Toddle home Wyclef!

Personally, Wyclef should be so lucky to even work with an artist like Michael Jackson, if anything I would PAY to work with him, not the other way round, loser! ;)

well, if that's what he's complaining about, work on the album in '00 that's still 8 years ago, and if you snooze you lose... also, why talk to a tabloid or a publication if you're owed all this money? should wyclef be talking to a lawyer or mj's camp about it?
