Some of you might remember that this happened last year. While they weren't able to break the record, they certainly got the word out there. This year they are starting earlier and also have some promoters behind them. I love that they have the ideal behind the campaign that you can change the world through dance... and they are using Michael Jackson's Thriller to do that. This year they may be a bit more successful since it is the 25th anniversary of Thriller and all...

This year it will be held on the 25th / 26th of October. Event registration is now open.

Michael Jackson: 'Thrill the World' Pt. 3

From the promoter:
OFF THE WALL, Michael Jackson's first solo album, introduced the world to the shiny suits and bright white socks that would become MJ's first calling cards. But it wasn't until twenty five years ago, with the release of a little album called THRILLER, that Michael Jackson really became 'Michael Jackson.'

Somehow, no other wannabe pop star before Michael Jackson understood how to harness the power of TV. Before Michael, music videos were just cheap promo tapes that showed a band playing a song, and maybe dancing around a little bit. Well, MJ would have none of that. He refused to even make music videos, and instead created what are still referred to as short films. He wove entire stories around his pop songs, and the world was transfixed. Twenty five years later, THRILLER is still the number one video on almost every list, and the cult is only growing.

In the middle of the THRILLER video, something magical happens - Michael and his date are surrounded by zombies, and all of a sudden Michael gets zombified as well. He isn't bitten or attacked but just seems to become undead by the proximity of the other zombies, and before long - he's their leader! Michael Jackson can control these walking corpses! But more than that - he can make them dance. And not just dance, but D-A-N-C-E. And twenty five years later, that THRILLER dance is still burning up the entire globe. Weddings, prisons, and graveyards - thanks to the new popularity of reenacting the Thriller dance on YouTube, we've seen people break into spontaneous synchronized dancing more times in real life than we have in movies like 13 GOING ON 30.

On the day of the release of the 25th Anniversay Edition of THRILLER, we're celebrating by launching our newest MJ collaboration - THRILL THE WORLD . We've partnered up with ThrillTheWorld.com to help them break the world record for having the most people all over the globe performing the Thriller dance at the exact same time, and we're giong to see to it that Austin leads the planet in thrilling everyone. Here's the deal - from now through October, we're going to have at least one MICHAEL JACKSON SING-ALONG in every calendar. After each Sing-Along, we're going to take the entire audience over to another club downtown where we will teach and rehearse the Thriller dance. Then in late October, we're going to invite every single MICHAEL JACKSON SING-ALONG attendee from the whole of 2008 to come back out and participate in one MASSIVE zombified dance party.

I was thinking of participating when I noticed there's going to be one held in Finland, until I read it's going to be in Middle-Finland and it's hundrets of kilometers away from where I live. Blah, no offence but some people just don't get it.. there's an obvious reason why most of the events (no matter what they are about) are being held in Helsinki, cos then more people can and will attend! No way Im paying quite expensive train tickets and sit in a train for hours so I can dance for 5 mins.

There's one being held like 10 minutes from me. I was so going to go just for giggles, but my friends think it's stupid and won't come with me. :glare:
I'm far too shy to go alone.

I might do the one in Brissie, but seeing as it's at 4am, I am trying to get someone to do it with me.

Loïs Najarian, isn't she Michael's new spokesperson?

Anyway, I think that should have a thread of its own as it's not a part of the Thrill The World and sounds like it's a bit more official event, I guess.

I asked her if it had something to do with Thrill The World and she answered: "Thrill The World is going to combine with us, yes". So I guess the two events are pretty much linked. :)

Lois Najarian was working at Sony BMG and she was in charge of public relations for Thriller 25th Anniversary Edition. Then she created her own company (whose website indicates that Michael Jackson is one of her clients). I still don't know to this day if she's his spokesperson "just for the Thriller-related events" or if she's his spokesperson for all matters related to his career.

The following has been published over at QuincyJones.com (http://www.quincyjones.com/):

“Thriller” still thrilling the world

Quincy often marvels at the impact of Thriller — Michael Jackson’s landmark album produced by Quincy — even 25 years after its release.

Proof of the album’s continuing popularity and impact comes in the form of Thrill the World, a volunteer organization that exists to stage simultaneous dances of the song “Thriller” around the globe.

This weekend, “Thriller” fans will meet to stage another simultaneous dance at official events in 96 cities in 12 different countries around the world, including in Hollywood, Calif. at the Hollywood and Highland Shopping Center at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Oct. 25).

Thrill the World, the brainchild of dancer Ines Markeljevic, began in 2006 in Toronto where 62 people danced to “Thriller” and in the process set a Guinness World Record for the largest “Thriller” dance.

By 2007, the group had launched its own website to help spread the word. As a result, Thrill the World was able to attract 1,722 people in 52 cities on five continents to dance to “Thriller” simultaneously on October 27 and 28, 2007.

This year, Thrill the World expects even bigger numbers. For more information, visit the Thrill the World website (http://www.thrilltheworld.com/).

We will be going to this Brisbane event:

http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/queensland/zombies-to-thrill-the-world--and-brisbane/2008/10/24/1224351504752.html

In the small hours of Sunday morning, a swarm of Brisbane's most philanthropic zombies will perform Michael Jackson's Thriller as part of one of the world's largest simultaneous dance events.

Part-charity fundraiser, part-world record attempt, this weekend's Thrill the World event is also a great excuse for the local dance-loving un-dead to stay up late and celebrate the phenomenon's Australian debut.

Andrew Curnock, one of the team responsible for co-ordinating the local arm of the global initiative, said the idea for a Brisbane Thrill the World dance began with the search for a birthday party theme.

Hitting the internet in search of inspiration, the Queensland University of Technology tutor and gaming software sound engineer described how an infamous YouTube clip provided the inspiration.

"We basically came across that viral video that featured a bunch of (prison) innmates performing the Thriller dance," Curnock said.

"One YouTube clip really just led to another and that's how we found out about Thrill the World and recognised the potential to get involved locally."

The movement traces its origins back to Canada when, in 2006, a group of 62 zombies set a Guiness World record for Largest Thriller Dance in one location at a community hall.

Since then, it has garnered worldwide attention, with a new world record for Largest Simultaneous Thriller Dance in multiple locations set on October 28 as 1722 people in 52 cities on five continents mass-danced their way into the history books.

Curnock said he was looking forward to raising the bar this Sunday at 4am, when weeks of dance classes and costume preparation will come to the fore.

"We're expecting a very decent turnout," he said, "and whilst we are looking forward to raising money for our charity, Camp Quality... it's also just a great excuse to dance en masse to one of the catchiest songs of all time."

"Not everyone has to be a great dancer to participate either - it's more about getting out there and getting involved."

Curnock also hopes to attract the support of the hundreds of un-dead fans who participated in the Brisbane Zombie Walk earlier this year, and to make it a permanent fixture on Brisbane's social calendar.

"I'd hate for this to be just a passing fad," he said.

New Record: 3,960 Zombies "Thrill"-ed The World
[Unofficial total. Numbers are still coming in.]

65 Cities in 9 countries united in Thrill the World's attempt to break world record for Largest Simultaneous Michael Jackson's "Thriller" Dance

Los Angeles, CA – Over 3,933 people around the world participated Thrill the World, a worldwide attempt to break the World Record for the Largest Simultaneous Thriller Dance on Saturday/Sunday, October 25/26, 2008. Last year, 1,722 people simultaneously performed the dance in 55 cities around the globe.

Thrill the World Creator & Director Ines Markeljevic kicked off the countdown with the Los Angeles team performing at Hollywood & Highland Center in Los Angeles, with special guest Adam Sevani.

"We want to connect the world by sharing the joy of dance, the celebration of community and the passion for living," said Markeljevic. "I believe we did just that today."

Most of Thrill the World participants have no prior dance experience, Thriller or otherwise, until they attend workshops and rehearsals put on by Thrill the World teams, or learn from free online tutorial videos produced by Markeljevic.

"Our hope is that by you witnessing or being a part of Thrill the World, you will see for yourself that any dream, vision, idea, passion you have can be realized," said Markeljevic.

http://www.latimes.com/theguide/events-and-festivals/la-gd-thriller27-2008oct27,0,5445419.story

Hordes of the dancing undead fanned out across the world on Saturday for the second annual Thrill The World dance-a-thon. Dressed as zombies, thousands of amateur dancers took over neighborhood parks, community centers and shopping malls in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest worldwide simultaneous performance of the dance sequence from Michael Jackson's 1983 "Thriller" music video.

The final numbers are still being tallied, but according to event organizer Ines Markeljevic, 4,179 people in 72 cities across 10 nations participated, easily breaking last year's record of 1,722 participants.

In Los Angeles, 114 people showed up at the Hollywood & Highland complex in full zombie garb. Led by dancer Adam Sevani, they shook and shimmied their way through the dance moves in the legendary music video. An impressive sight but nothing compared to the turnout in Austin, which featured 881 dancers including the city's mayor, Will Wynn. Los Angeles has some catching up to do. (C'mon, Antonio, we know you can outdance that dude in Austin!)

Markeljevic isn't resting on her laurels. "My goal is a quarter million next year. I think that's completely possible," she says. "I'm going to focus on contacting every single school in North America so we can reach that number."

Los Angeles co-organizer Mahdroo McCaleb says he's been contacted by Michael Jackson's people who have requested a personal DVD for the pop star. And there's a rumor floating around that Jackson may have been hovering over the event on Saturday. "We had a helicopter fly overhead shooting video of us," McCaleb says. "No one's claimed the helicopter and the footage hasn't appeared anywhere. We thought it might be Michael Jackson. Who else can afford a helicopter?"

Whether or not Jackson was there in body, his spirit infused the event. "I don't know how it all came together," McCaleb says, "but when we were out there doing the dance it just felt electric. We were spot on. It was everything I'd hoped it would be."

October 31, 2008 - MICHAEL JACKSON THRILLER FANS MAKE HISTORY AND BREAK GUINNESS WORLD RECORD FOR MOST PEOPLE DOING THE

New York, NY (October 30, 2008) - Seventy-three Michael Jackson Thriller fans today broke the Guinness World Record for the most people doing the Thriller dance at the same at Madame Tussauds New York in Times Square. The previous Guinness World Record was sixty-two people.

Fans from near and far - including one participant from Columbus, Ohio - dressed as zombies and as the King of Pop himself to be a part of this history-making moment with Madame Tussauds wax figure of Michael Jackson at the center of the action. The record-setting event helped celebrate the iconic videos 25th anniversary and Thrillers skyrocket to #1 on the iTunes album chart. Thriller 25, The New Edition of the World's Biggest Selling Album Of All Time is released by Sonys Legacy Recordings and is in stores now. While Michael Jackson was not able to attend the event, he was thrilled with its success. I always thought Halloween and 'Thriller' fit each other like a glove," said Jackson.

Prior to the record-breaking dance, participants took lessons on how to do the Thriller dance from Crunch fitness instructors, received zombie mini-makeovers and had the opportunity to take a photo with Madame Tussauds Michael Jackson wax figure.

Madame Tussauds New York is so excited to have been a part of this history-making moment, said Janine DiGioacchino, General Manager of Madame Tussauds New York and Washington D.C.

The Thriller celebration has just begun. After dancing at Madame Tussauds New York, Zombie dancers are expected to rise from the dead again on Halloween night and descend on 6th avenue as part of the New York Village Halloween parade.
