Due to the success of Fall Out Boy’s cover version of ‘Beat It’, the group might need to change their schedule. Bassist Pete Wentz told MTV News that they intended to hit the studio in June or July to work on a new album. However, plans could change, given the success of their cover of the Michael Jackson song - which has quickly become a mainstay in the iTunes top 10. They’re now planning to promote the single and Wentz said they’ll shoot a video for the track next week.

a quote from their journal on friendsorenemies.com

We were worried that m.j. Might roll in his non-existent grave when he heard our rendition but we were sure van halen would high five us for calling our friend john mayer to play the solo on this.

Honestly, sorry if anyone likes them or likes their version of Beat It, but I think MJ is "rolling in his non - existent grave" their rendition of it is horrible!

I actually enjoyed the cover of Beat It.
It was edgy and so sick.
Not as great as the original but it was awesome.
Point blank, no cover or rendition can top the original...

It wasn't bad...It was GOOD until he started singing, i like how the more rock type instruments sound with the tune.
Also, it would be better if it didn't have the original to live up to.

honestly i sincerely dislike it - alot!
MJ should have jumped the chance to release the Fergie duet as a single. Would have been a massive hit. Oh well, chance gone begging.
I especially dont like the john meyer guitar solo.
i was excited that meyer was doing the solo coz i love what he does, until i heard it that is! LOL! i think its terrible. His solo sounded extremely lazy.

I agree with you damien, it just was not good, not at all. I think it's great that they wanted to do Michael's song, and I think it's great that they didn't want him to be laughing at them for it, but... I think he's laughing...

Thanks for posting this! For the record, I do like Fall Out Boy's songs...

...I thought it wasn't bad...it was okay, I guess, but it doesn't stand out as anything original for them, it's just a straight up cover (the only ounce of creativity came from the their version of the solo, and that's cause Eddie Van Halen's is impossible to copy exactly).

And as such, it doesn't come nearly close to the perfection of MJ's! Sorry...

Still, I'm glad this brings more attention to MJ's music, that's the AWESOME asepect!!!! :-D

Fall out Boy Talk about their "Beat It" video clip:

http://www.mtv.ca/news/article.jhtml?id=8391

Fall Out Boy Say Their 'Beat It' Clip Is Like All Of Michael Jackson's Videos 'But On A Fall Out Boy Budget'

'I don't know what our budget is, but I know it does not include enough to get him here,' Pete Wentz says of rumored MJ cameo.

Security was Fort-Knox-tight on the set of Fall Out Boy's new video - for their cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It" - and not just because of the whole "Is Pete Wentz a daddy-to-be?" drama that's been following the band for a week now.

No, the reason we're not allowed to actually show you anything from the shoot is because the guys in FOB are rather worried that you'll make fun of the clothes they've been forced to wear by director Shane C. Drake - which could generously be described as "Poison-meets-Spandau Ballet/ NKOTB," only w-a-a-y more embarrassing.

"Shane described the treatment to me, and I didn't get it at all. I mean, it's cool, it's awesome, and I trust his vision, but it all sounded very strange to me, so I don't really know what I'm doing half the time, hence the reason I got talked into wearing this," Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump laughed, pulling at his tattered acid-washed jeans and varsity jacket. "I think we're shooting for 1984, but it looks as though 1988 exploded all over me. I mean, these clothes are totally not strange at all, and they're very comfortable. And they look great on me."

"My costume is this take on one of the guys from Michael Jackson's original 'Beat It' video, like, the guy who plays the rival dancer," bassist Wentz added. "He's in this yacht gear/ dance-gang-fight-gear-attire get-up. Which is amazing. I look pretty good."

Take our word for it: The costumes are pretty epic. And aside from the fashion, here's what else we can tell you about the "Beat It" video: It's less of a remake of MJ's original clip as it is an homage to the Gloved One's entire oeuvre, with cameos aplenty. In fact, while we were on set, we witnessed FOB wandering a Chinatown alleyway, only to stumble onto a karate class/ impromptu-dance session being taught by Tony Hale, who most (OK, most with taste) know from his role as Buster Bluth on the late, lamented "Arrested Development."

Seriously.

"I think when you're doing a Michael Jackson cover, there's this expectation that you're going to do one of his videos verbatim," Stump said. "What we decided to do was kind of inspired by Michael Jackson and the mythology of him. There are specific images that are reference points for us, but at any given point, it's not any of his videos. It's kind of all of his videos, all at once, but on a Fall Out Boy budget, so it's not quite as fancy."

"If there were all these places where MJ can make his comeback, I would suggest this video," Wentz laughed. "He should really let the world know he's still around. I don't know what our budget is, but I know it does not include enough to get him here. Multiple calls were not returned. I don't think Michael Jackson has a number."

And even though the budget is a tad bit low by MJ standards, Fall Out Boy promise that fans can still look forward to a spectacle worthy of the King of Pop, which means elaborate costuming, exotic locales and, of course, lots and lots of dancing ... just not a whole lot of if being done by anyone actually in Fall Out Boy.

"There's not too much dancing coming from us. I think other members of the band may be doing some dancing, but I don't dance. Gangsters kinda boogie, you know what I'm saying?" Wentz said. "I think trying to emulate Michael Jackson is funny. You can't do it that well. If you try and do it, it's kind of a bummer. Chris Brown pulls it off very well, I've seen some Japanese people who can bring it around ... I personally can't, so I won't go and embarrass myself or anyone else."

I keep seeing the video on E4's music programmes but they cut it just before the guitar solo is supposed to kick in. IS there a guitar solo on their version or are they just really bad musicians and couldn't be bothered to try?

New info:

http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7010787243

Los Angeles, CA (CNS) - The Fall Out Boy's new video of their Michael Jackson cover "Beat It," pays homage to pop star Jackson. The full-length video will premiere on MTV.com at midnight on Monday and will also air on Tuesday's TRL.
According to bassist Pete Wentz, their new video isn't a tribute to one specific Michael Jackson song, but instead the video gives between 25 and 50 nods to Jackson.
Wentz said some of the tributes are obvious such as moon-walking and one-gloved dancers.
Wentz told People.com that in order to get the full "Michael Jackson" effect, the video needs to be paused and watched frame-by-frame to figure it out.
There are also celebrity cameos in the video, including Tony Hale from "Arrested Development" who appears as a karate sensei.
The song appears on a CD packaged with the band's new DVD, "Live in Phoenix."

I just heard it for the first time.

I hate it.

What the hell is he doing with that guitar?

It takes a good player to pull off an Eddie Van Halen solo...whoever played that can't play for ****.

Mulleno

^^ That's John Mayer.. I don't like the solo either, I think it's awful.. I think it would have been a better idea to maybe sample the Eddie Van Halen solo from the original.

On the other hand, he's quite a good guitarist judging from YouTube..

^^^

Oh, I didn't realise he was on it too...

All I've seen of him, he's been good at playing his own stuff, but not playing other peoples (like when he joined The Police at Live Earth)...and I wouldn't say he could match EVH for technical ability (in terms of regard amongst other players, Eddie is probably 2nd only to Hendrix)...

They wouldn't need to sample Ed...just play a solo he can both play and make work with the song. It shouldn't be that difficult.
